Desk notes

Insights

Short notes from the desk: grading, provenance, and when not to sell.

Grading

Why wire rim still commands the book

On High Relief twenties, the rim is not a variety footnote. It is the strike. Population reports understate how few survive with undisturbed rims.

Provenance

Named collections and the quiet premium

A plate match from a 1940s catalogue often does more for a coin than a point of grade. We keep the paper with the metal.

Market

Private treaty versus the evening sale

Trophy gold frequently clears higher off-catalogue, provided both sides can wait. Timing is the third party in every deal.

Authentication

When to decline a holder

A green bean does not rescue a cleaned field. We turn away coins that would embarrass the cabinet, even when the slab is correct.

Estates

Inventories that courts can read

An appraisal written only for the trade is a liability. Insurers, trustees, and heirs need the same file, in the same language.

Storage

Humidity is a fiduciary risk

Inert holders and a written environment beat a safe-deposit box anecdote. A collection is an object of trust from the first purchase.
